Can studies include non-clinical outcomes, such as self-efficacy and patient activation, as primary outcomes?

This funding announcement encourages well-justified outcomes that are clinically meaningful with a focus on optimizing physical and mental functioning of older adults. Outcomes should also be considered important by patients and/or their caregivers. Outcomes such as self-efficacy and patient activation could be potential mediators of the impact of interventions on clinically meaningful outcomes and may be included as secondary outcomes but not as primary outcomes.  Please review the Healthy Aging funding announcement for more details on examples of potential outcomes that maybe considered.
