The engagement section of the Research Plan must be tailored to each research proposal’s specific aims, methods, and targeted end-users. PCORI asks that investigators provide a clear and concise justification in the proposal of both the types of patients and stakeholders they intend to engage, and the types of activities in which they intend to engage those individuals. If investigators feel that it is not appropriate to engage patients in a proposed research project, they must provide a justification for why they feel patient engagement is not appropriate. To assist applicants, PCORI provides sample methods engagement plans from previously funded methods projects. The sample methods engagement plans are not intended to be comprehensive or prescriptive. Instead, they provide examples of options to incorporate engagement, where relevant, into the research process.
