In general, PCORI uses a broad definition of a healthcare system. Healthcare systems can operate at multiple societal and organizational levels (e.g., individual patients, family and social supports, clinicians and care teams, organizations and/or practice settings, local community resources, and the state- and national-level policy environments) and include entities that deliver, arrange, purchase, and/or coordinate healthcare services. Healthcare systems’ PCOR compares healthcare system interventions (e.g., innovative technologies, personnel structures, organizational structures and policies, and incentive structures) that are intended to optimize the quality, outcomes, and/or efficiency of patient care and have the greatest potential for sustained impact and replication within and across healthcare systems.
