“Stepped care” is not universally or precisely defined, and the term was not used in this PFA. PCORI considers stepped care to be one of many possible types of sequenced interventions; as such, it is not synonymous with sequenced interventions. Some investigators consider stepped care to involve a sequence of treatments where there is augmentation of earlier treatments that continue to be implemented. However, other treatment sequences are possible, such as patients switching to an entirely new treatment and ceasing one or more prior treatments.
